Developing as a Professional Educator

  • Described a professional goal beyond induction with actions to meet the goal

My professional goal beyond induction is fostering interculturalism in my projects as well as daily practices. There are different cultures and backgrounds within the same classroom, and my goal is to encourage respectful and open-minded communication between individuals. This goal can be achieved through visual language as well as critiques and comments they offered on each other's projects.

  • Considered how they will remain a connected educator

In my daily practice, I frequently check in with individual students, and try my best to stay connected to their ideas as well as their personal lives. Art practices come from real life, it is important for students to recognize and find the story within their personal lives and convert them into visual language. My job is to help them achieve this goal. And I truly believe it helps them develop their own maturity, especially during teenage years.

  • Shared advice for new teachers

My advice for new teachers is to be open-minded to all kinds of expressions. Students come from all different economic and cultural backgrounds so they will be having diverse opinions. Being receptive to those opinions and converting them into motivation for artworks is an important skill that art teachers should hold.

Contributing to the Profession

  • Highlighted three (3) quality resources

Here are the three resources that I found useful in my practice:

1. Canva: I recommend this tool for 2 reasons, one is to make attractive presentations. It does help students to pay more attention when it's needed, and because of the dynamic visuals it just fits right into the subject I am teaching. the second reason I recommend it is that sometimes students can use it as a tool for inspiration. For example, we did a ceramic project creating their own monster figure.

The following diagram shows how they can use Canva whiteboard function to customize their design of the monster. They can use different stickers to mix and match their own design. It is user friendly enough that students can get to it easily.

2. Instagram: I find it useful in terms of looking for accessible ideas for lesson planning. Especially anticipatory sets at the beginning of the class. Instagram generates quick art ideas that grabs attention right away. I found art under 5 minutes to use depending on my lesson plan for the day. Students get engaged deeper when you introduce the lesson through an accessible activity.

3. Your valuable colleagues: You learn from experienced colleagues! Talk to them. It doesn’t matter if he or she is teaching a different subject. I learned so many teaching techniques from our AVID teachers like role playing or randomizing grouping.

Testimony

  • I find Yuqi’s temperament to be curious, inclusive, perceptive, intellectually focused with high emotional and social intelligence. She is very responsible and there is a sophistication and gravity to her teaching style. That being said, she is also humble and very open to positive criticism. It is clear that she genuinely wants to learn from each experience in the classroom.

    Marybeth Tereszkiewicz

Director – Art Education - Academy of Art University

  • Yuqi Pan is a warm, mature, responsible, and intensely hard-working and talented young woman with a deep commitment to the development of her art. She relates well to, and communicates easily and clearly with other people.

    Bruce Waldman

Adjunct Professor - School of Visual Arts

  • Ms. Pan has created an inclusive culture of learning in her class. All students, including a small cohort of students in our mod/severe program, are provided with clear instructions, expectations, and models. Students in Ms. Pan's classes have everything they need to express their creativity and be successful in the visual arts.
