Mindful Practice - Mandala drawings

In Buddhism, Mandala symbolize the universe of ideal forms. The shapes that integrated with each other and symmetrical form make Mandala aesthetically beautiful to create. As I complete my student teaching at Edna Brewer Middle school in Oakland– my mentor was Lisa Perkins. A component of all public school education is cultural and historical perspectives as well as social and emotional health. My 7-8th grade students created their own Mandalas – using mathematical calculations to create circular symmetry and the art elements of shape and color and the principle of rhythm to reflect their personalities. A mandala is a spiritual and ritual symbol in Buddhist practice and is used as a mediation tool to help center the mind.

The finished art pieces were reprinted into 6x8 ornaments and exhibited in the Ghirardelli’s Square, San Francisco as part of the Christmas tree celebration.
